Pre-Week

Last night Josh and I watched the documentary "Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead" and it was pretty eye opening. I won't tell you details about it because your pre-week assignment is to watch it. But, it got Josh going enough to stop the documentary in the first 25 min and say, "lets go get a juicer right now!"

We all "know" what we are supposed to do to get healthy, but it's just so damn hard getting started. I always come up with a flood of excuses of why I can't do it "right now." There will never be a good time for this, some event, trip, or life interruption will always be in the way. I've always found the only thing that gets me started is something eye opening, like this documentary, and the only thing that keeps me going is having a goal and a good support system.  Well, Lauren, Frank, Josh, Jillian and Morgan - that will be you this time. Thank you for joining ranks with Josh and I to get started on our "why the fuck did we start this?" journey.  We will all be miserable for a few days, move on to getting our health "highs" and hopefully after day 21, make it a lifestyle change.

Ok, so what the hell are we doing?

Well lets start with this week :

1. Get a hold of a juicer.  Start trying out recipes that you think you will like this week.
2. Watch the documentary "Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead"  It's on demand on Netflix.
3. Write down your goals for this process, it can be one or ten, whatever comes to mind.
4. Prepare the people in your life - let them know how important this is to you and ask for their support. If they want to join - awesome, refer them to this blog and we will add more to the ranks.
5. Look at the recipes that I will be sending you to get prepared with foods you will be buying for next week.

Which leads me to when: Monday, January 16, 2012.  So, our 21st day will be.....Sunday, February 5, 2012.

Here are the basic guidelines to this cleanse:

1. What is being CUT OUT:
- processed foods or beverages
- added sugar
-dairy
-gluten
-caffeine
-alcohol.

2. Well, what the hell CAN we eat?
- for starters we are going to juice everyday for at least one meal.  You can choose if this is breakfast, lunch or dinner.  You can juice every meal if you want to.  There is no limit on this.  There is just a minimum of once a day.
- any fruit or vegetable.
- fish, chicken, eggs (baked, grilled, steamed is best for the fish and chicken and poaching and hard boiled are best for eggs) Try and use as little oil as possible.
- whole grains (i.e. quinoa, brown rice, barley).
- nuts.
- beans and lentils.

To help you with recipes - here is a great website:

you can click (on the right upper hand side) week 1,2,3 for recipes - these are all safe and may give you ideas for other things you might want to make.

Good luck getting prepared this week and please post comments for any questions or motivational things you might want to say.  And yes, you can say an occasional "&%*@! on there too when you are feeling pissed off :)

  1. DAY 1 - FRANK
Yeah. I binged this weekend. Spinach artichoke dip, filet mignon, double bacon cheeseburger, buckets of french fries, all consumed with a smile on my face. What's funny is that I rarely eat this poorly, but I anticipated any craving I might have over the next 21 days, and knocked'em out over the weekend. My feelings about my physique are mixed at best, but on the inside, I will always be a fat little girl. Lauren and I replaced breakfast with a juice this morning: kale, celery, carrots, apples, oranges. I made 20oz and it was almost too much. I'm FULL.

No coffee or tea sucks, absolutely. Is caffeine even that bad for you? Don't Asian wise men share their omnipotent knowledge while sustaining their existential being via rice and green tea alone? I'll look up why a cup of Joe is a no-go, and I'll post about it.

    1. Frank - Josh and I did the same - in fact last night, a big fat pizza with pepperoni and bacon!
As for the coffee - read my challenge on the day one blog http://emilylynnberk.blogspot.com/2012/01/day-one-week-one.html

As for the question - is it bad, well my thought is anything that makes you go through withdrawals means, either it's bad or you're having too much of it. All substances should be done in moderation - that's always been my motto. So, even if you go back to it at some point, just have a little. Or switch to a caffeine, like green tea, that has other benefits. I'm lucky that I don't rely on coffee for a pick up, it does too much damage to me. Even for the 5am wake-ups during the school year when I'm going to the hospital - I just can't bring myself to do it b/c I'm scared of what that will do to me later in the day (jittery hands are not go when trying to put an IV in!)

Either way - good luck and post often!

    1. Awesome! Thanks for the info. Frank!! I also read that coffee doesn't age you like alcohol and cigarettes do.

And obviously when you add all those delicious creamers and sugars into your coffee is a problem too. Drinking it black is probably best.

Awesome that you are eliminating it all together though! You're a champ!
